  • Lucky Stiff | Be You Productions

Acknowledgement of Country We would like to acknowledge that we create and perform on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We are privileged and honoured to be able to continue the long history of storytelling on this land. About Lucky Stiff Content Warning: Use of Fake Firearms & Partial Nudity We're back!!!! After a hit season in 2023, the team behind Be You Productions' Lucky Stiff is back for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2024 and have created a new company called Bold Offer Productions. Our 2024 production is bigger, bolder and bubbling over with joy! Lucky Stiff is the heartwarming tale of a man, a corpse, and a whole lot of money. Harry Witherspoon, a down-on-his-luck shoe salesman, inherits a fortune from his dead uncle, but there's a catch: he has to drag the old man's embalmed body to Monte Carlo for one last hurrah. Along the way, Harry finds love, adventure, and the true meaning of family (even if it's with a deceased relative). Lucky Stiff was first produced Off-Broadway in 1988, with Book and Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Music by Stephen Flaherty (also known for their work on Seussical the Musical, Anastasia, Ragtime, and Once on This Island). It is based on "The Man Who Broke The Bank At Monte Carlo" by Michael Butterworth. First produced by Playwrights Horizons, Inc. Licensed exclusively by Music Theatre International (Australasia). Our Cast Chelsea Hyde (she/her) Annabel Glick Chelsea’s recent theatre credits include Lucy Grant (Bright Star - FabNobs), Pickles (The Great American Trailer Park Musical - PEP Productions), and Lucy (Helene Dunlop’s ‘Mrs Bin’ - Cracked Actors Theatre Summer Reading 2022). When not onstage, Chelsea is teaching dance and drama at her local dance school (Aspect Motion School of Dance), and works as a freelance admin assistant supporting creatives and arts associations. Chelsea completed her Bachelor of Music (Music Theatre) at the Australian Institute of Music, and is represented by Ian Nisbet Talent Management. She is forever grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Australia’s rich history of storytelling in this colourful, chaotic tale. Daniel Cook (he/him) Harry Witherspoon Daniel is a passionate creative/actor/singer/dancer/anything else they’ll let him do. Daniel studied Musical Theatre and Dance at Theatre Blacks, and is now out in the real world, stumbling about on wobbly baby giraffe legs. Daniel was Assistant Director for ‘Rain Falling On The Abattoir’ and ‘Billy Loves Cha Cha, Forever’ (Cracked Actors Theatre), and a performer in ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Shrek’, ‘Bookends’ (SLAMS), ‘Mary Contrary’ (FabNobs). When not performing, Daniel can be found buying craft supplies for yet another hobby. Daniel is represented by Ian Nisbet Talent Management. We volunteer our time to create these shows, and our actors and associates are engaged under our Ethical Profit Share model. We keep expenses low, which means cheaper tickets and more take-home money for our actors and associates. We believe theatre should be people focussed as, without people, there would be no live theatre. We believe many minds make for a better product. The love for the work, for theatre, and for each other.

We will get back to you if we have a spot for you and are inspired by your story. Use this opportunity to sell your passion to us! Talk yourself up! • Be New | Be You

Developing and nurturing new Australian works of music theatre Our Inaugural Project The Be New W riting Workshop 2022 Our Be New Project in 2022 was a 15-week program focusing on developing 5 shows, each at different stages of their evolution. We shared songs and scripts between our writers and facilitators, and used a structured framework to assist our writers in exloring and evaluating their creations. The format: 3-hour sessions once a week for 12-weeks, split into two blocks of 6 weeks with a 3 week break in the middle. Collaboration with creatives and mentors, with teams or individuals at the helm. The opportunity for table reads and stand-and-sing sessions. OUR SHOWS It Never Was a Phase, Kid Alex Langdon It Never Was a Phase, Kid written by Alex Langdon, has been in development for a number of years and has been a passion project for Alex throughout its many iterations. In selecting shows for this inaugural Be New workshop program, we were so impressed with the integrity and authenticity of the human connections explored in this show. Welcome to 2008! School sucks, life’s a bitch, but at least there’s only 9 hours left on your limewire download of Fall Out Boy’s new album. For socially outcast BFFs Blair and Ellie, at least there’s only three more years of homework, P.E. and bullies to suffer through. This Means War! Zoë Harlen This Means War!, written by Zoë Harlen is a joyful, comedic story of one family’s desperate fight to defend the place they call home. Keeping it in the family, in more ways than one, this story is the musical theatre reimagining of a juvenile fiction book written by her father, Jonathan Harlen, called ‘The Cockroach War’. What stood out about Zoe’s show to the facilitation team was the beautiful line she walks between sincerity and absurdity. I believe we described it as Roahl Dahl’s Matilda meets The Castle. The White Rose Oliver Thomson and Isabella Dymalovski The White Rose, written by Oliver Thomson and Isabella Dymalovski is based on a true story of a group of young German students caught in the middle of the 2nd World War. Despite the risk, they secretly write and publish anti-nazi pamphlets and share their dissenting thoughts and opinions at great risk to themselves. Despite being the youngest writers in our cohort, Olli and Izzy have tackled this difficult subject matter artfully and respectfully, and their genuine passion for telling the stories of these young people was one of the reasons we were so excited to bring them on board for the Be New workshop. Lunar New Year John Mondello, Aiden Wang, and Nicole Rammesh Lunar New Year, written by John Mondello, Aiden Wang, and Nicole Rammesh is a deep dive into, and celebration of, asian diaspora. More importantly, it’s the exploration of what it means to find, define and embrace your cultural identity. It’s a testament to their skill and aptitude as writers that they have managed to create a story that, while focussing on asian culture specifically, explores fundamental questions about belonging and living up to expectations. Zombies at 6 Chloe Towan Last, but absolutely not least, we have Zombies at 6 written by Chloe Towan. Zombies at 6 is the fresh cab off the rank when it comes to the shows involved in our workshop this year. Due to personal reasons, Chloe artfully pivoted her focus to writing a new show in the latter half of the program. That alone is an absolute testament to her calibre as a writer, but the first reading of her extract had us in absolute stitches. The whole concept was so much fun, and we cannot wait to see where the rest of the story will go. Speaking of concept, Zombies at 6 follows Channel 43; a less than successful broadcasting studio who are facing closure following less than stellar ratings. That is, until they become the only remaining news programme following a zombie apocalypse. • Isabelle Davis

< Back Isabelle Davis she/her Deb Born in Melbourne and raised in Shanghai, Isabelle graduated from the Western Australlian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) with a Bachelor of Music Theatre in 2019 – just in time for the world to shut down. Isabelle used this time to focus on her music career, releasing her debut EP ‘Small World’ in September 2021 followed by her debut single ‘Faith in Rainy Days’ later that year. Isabelle then featured in ‘Find Me’ - the theme song of award-winning audio drama, The Realm Tree, as the voice of Talia Wick. While at WAAPA, she played Sherrie Christian in Rock of Ages and Jenny in Company. Isabelle feels immensely grateful to be returning to the theatre in Be You Productions’ Ordinary Days, and is looking forward to more to come.

  • Dan Hillman

< Back Dan Hillman he/him Warren Hailing originally from the regional city of Ballarat, Daniel Hillman is an upcoming Actor/Writer often noted for his playful sense of humour, and his love of delving into the ‘weird’. Whilst studying a Bachelor of Acting for Stage and Screen at Federation University (formally BAPA), Daniel appeared as Dromio of Syracuse in ‘The Comedy of Errors’ (directed by James Pratt), John Wisehammer in ‘Our Country’s Good’ (directed by Beng Oh), and was also given the opportunity to write and perform his one-man-show ‘Imprint’, which was presented at the annual student theatre festival. After graduating in 2019, Daniel toured for two years with Brainstorm Productions; one of Australia’s largest and most respected educational theatre companies. Here, Daniel performed in ‘The H Team’ and ‘The Flipside’ (both directed by Jenny Johnson), travelling around Victoria performing to over 25,000 students in 2021 alone. Daniel is incredibly excited for ‘Ordinary Days’ to be his Music Theatre debut, and is very grateful to Be You Productions for the amazing opportunity.

People who put the story first when they perform, or want to learn how to! We’ll use your response to understand what’s important to you from the moment you apply, and what you feel you need to be provided to be empowered. Please prepare a video with the following: A short introduction that introduces yourself and what you find challenging about your career as a performer. Two contrasting songs (one that you feel really shows storytelling and one that you find challenging). Each song should be a maximum of 32 bars/one minute each. There is no issue great or small that we won’t help with, so please reach out to Brendan or through the form. Audition Form More information / FAQs WHO ARE WE? Be You is a person-centred organisation, with it’s only mandate being to empower performers. We believe empowerment is the process of becoming stronger and more confident through developing a positive sense of self and being provided with the resources required to succeed. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? We see so many talented people out there in the industry who are just waiting to catch a break. We’ve seen how those with degrees from certain schools are more likely to get in the room, and we spent a while looking in to the reasons this happens by interviewing people from all levels of the industry. O ne thing consistently came up: talent is not really that important, what IS important is the skills that lie in between. Preparation, Communication, Wellbeing. These three skills aren’t being taught outside of the schools (often not even within) and without these skills, it’s hard for casting agents to assess you from an application to audition, let alone to then successfully audition and hit rehearsals with a professional attitude, self-awareness, and self-confidence. Your journey is infinite, and we wish to use our resources to instil this infinite mindset in our cast. You can go many places to learn how to sing, dance, and act – we’re interested in developing the spaces in between. HOW WILL AUDITIONS WORK? To align with our values, we will be running a person-centred casting process. This will feel odd to some people, as we’re basing our audition approach on finding out who you are, where you need to go, if we’re able to help you get there, and the non-talent-related outcomes that you would benefit from. The first step is to fill out our application form which we’re using to learn about you while we see you for an audition. We’ll use your response to understand what’s important to you from the moment you apply, and what you feel you need to be provided to be empowered. Our curriculum is being provided with our application form. We’ll use these responses to begin prioritising the parts of each pillar, Preparation, Communication, and Wellbeing, to home in on exactly what you’re interested in pursuing. If you meet our criteria of being someone we feel will benefit from being cast in the showcase, we’ll invite you to an interview. The interview will be an informal chat about your application and your desired within the industry. After this, the panel will discuss what we’ve seen throughout the process from everyone and decide on who we would like to offer an opportunity to within the cast. HOW WILL WE DECIDE THE STRUCTURE? Once we have a cast, Brad will meet with everyone individually to talk about your needs and goals and ideas, take that away and develop a plan of action based on everyone’s needs. This process allows us to be focused on the needs of the individuals and group we have. We believe the best way to empower people is to meet them where they are and foster growth from there, rather than telling you what you all need and trying to make you fit our mould. You have your own story, and that story is the one we’re most passionate about telling. We’re not asking for specific mentors before we cast as this group may not require the skills that a mentor is there to teach. We don’t want to waste anyone’s time in providing you with anything you won’t benefit from. We’ll use our connections through Broadway Unplugg ed to find mentors that suit the needs of our cohort. In our initial introductory rehearsal, we'll roll out your specialised curriculum, talk about the mentors we've asked to come and help and have a plan for how the whole process will run.
